SUSTAINABLE COMPUTING, GOOD FOR YOUR BUSINESS, GREAT FOR OUR PLANET

With the increasing profile of Climate Change in the UK, many retailers have pledged to reduce their Carbon Footprint. But where should they look to start reducing energy consumption of their operations? According to analyst Gartner, IT accounts for two per cent of global carbon emissions. The technology sector therefore has a major role to play in sustainability as a large consumer of energy as well as having the potential to be a enabler of a low carbon future. Of course, no organization can turn the clock back;IT systems underpin the core business processes of all Corporations today. The key is to find innovative ways of minimising the environmental impact & the cost of delivering the IT Services that your users and customers need.

Sun is a leader in eco-responsible technologies, products, and business models, powering the network to enable sustainable computing through a commitment to changing how we affect the environment and IT. Our prime contribution—innovation—benefits both our customers’ business and, the environment by improving energy efficiency, using less harmful materials in manufacturing, encouraging reuse and recycling, and lowering green house gas emissions. No other industry player has the ability to engineer systems, storage, software, and services to synergistically yield tremendous savings in terms of energy, materials, space and labour, to enable sustainable computing.

Although sustainable business growth will demand changes in business practices & processes across almost every facet of an organisation, adopting the principles of Sustainable Computing can go a long way in helping enterprises reduce the negative impact that their operations may have on the environment.
Sun Microsystems develops the technologies that power the global marketplace. Guided by a singular vision -- "The Network is the Computer" -- Sun drives network participation through shared innovation, community development and open source leadership. Sun can be found in more than 100 countries and on the Web at http://sun.com

Pierhouse

pierhouseResearch by Pierhouse, a provider of marketing management services to major retailers, reveals that around 50%, and in some instances 90%, of Point of Sale (POS) material sent from head office to branches is thrown away, unused, much to the concern of staff.

Grocery retailers alone, therefore, could be wasting around 7,500 tonnes. In addition, as total UK retail annual spend on POS is £1.1bn and compliance rates are often as low as 50%, as much as £550m may be being wasted.

Pierhouse can help businesses become greener by reducing marketing wastage by 80%. It combines years of experience, working with clients such as Waitrose, with a flexible on-demand Media Management Service that can store branch specific information alongside all the elements that make up a marketing campaign (text, pictures and illustrations) in one place.  This means inappropriate POS material is not even produced and what is created is accurate and compliant, so campaigns can be executed more effectively and efficiently.

The One Bag - Rewarding ecological behaviour

One BagThe concept is surprisingly simple. Retailers offer the public a recyclable bag incorporating the “One Bag” label which has a unique number and barcode. There are some 80 different designs and sizes all made from recyclable materials. At point-of-sale the label is scanned and “One Bag” points are awarded proportional to the value of the purchase.

The customer goes to www.theonebag.co.uk, registers their details and the label number on the “One Bags” they own. All points earned at participating retailers are worth 1p each. The customer can use the points value as a donation to their preferred charity, or, simply use the value as part payment for their next purchase at a participating retailer.

This rewards ecological behaviour, provides a loyalty aspect for the retailers, introduces the use of recyclable shopping bags in a positive way rather than punitively and most importantly; gets plastic bags out of the high street.

The One Bag; is a joint venture between Scotcomms Technology Group Ltd and Pinnacle plc.

Acxiom – Making Sense of a Changing Retail Landscape

AcxiomWith the demographics of the UK population and consumers’ shopping habits ever-evolving, marketing and merchandising challenges for today’s retailers have never been tougher. ‘Media fragmentation’ is a real issue and simply understanding where, when and which channel people like to shop by is a top priority.

With 40 years of experience in the retail sector, Acxiom’s multi-channel data, database and digital solutions benefit our clients by providing actual insight into consumers’ off and online behaviour and media preferences. Informing them how those consumer channels actually interact with each other, means that retailers get a true picture of channel effectiveness – therefore optimising media spend, and informing merchandising and product allocation strategies.

Also, with consumers increasingly aware and ‘active’ in the “green” debate, our media optimisation solutions and leading segmentation products ensure our clients marketing wastage is minimised.
