Doug Gurr, Executive Development Director at Asda

Doug Gurr is the Executive Development Director at Asda reporting to Chief Executive Andy Bond.

Prior to Asda Doug spent five years as Chief Executive at Blueheath – the internet enabled stockless wholesaler he founded in 2001, and six years at the consulting firm McKinsey & Company, ending up as partner and head of the UK Retail Practice.

Doug is also a trustee of the Science Museum


Aamir Ahmad, Managing Director, Dwell

Aamir Ahmad launched dwell in November 2003 as a multi channel company with a mail order catalogue, website and a small retail store in Balham, South London.

Over the past 6 years dwell has grown into a strong multi channel business with a significant online presence; stores across the UK in Richmond, Birmingham, Glasgow, Manchester, Barton Square, Nottingham, Bristol, Milton Keynes, Cheltenham and three London stores plus concessions in Selfridges London and House of Fraser Bluewater, Reading and Oxford Street. Further concessions are planned with both concession partners.  Combined channels result in a turnover of over £25m.

Dwell produces a quarterly catalogue with mailings to customers on average every 5 weeks and a total print circulation of 2 million per annum. The customer base currently stands at 200k active buyers (total universe of 300K).

Aamir was the founder and CEO of furniture mail order catalogue Ocean which he ran for seven years.


Richard Burrell, Director of Media Operations, QVC UK

Richard is responsible for all of QVC’s media output across television and interactive at QVC UK's London HQ, including developing new digital services and satellite distribution.  He has been involved with QVC UK since its beginning in June 1993 and has been pivotal in QVC's moves into Digital TV and Interactive Media in both the UK and Germany and is currently part of the team working to launch QVC Italy.  Key developments include the website www.qvcuk.com, the launch of QVC Active - a service which enables shoppers to order products, in real time, simply by pressing a button on their Sky Digital or digital cable remote control, QVC Mobile, the broadband delivered QVC On Demand and the recently launched Beauty Channel.

Richard's career has spanned the BBC, Thames Television, Basys International (a subsidiary of ITN) and Theseus Ltd, a TV systems consultancy.


Darren Gardner, Head of New Business, Multichannel and Future Strategy, The Carphone Warehouse Group PLC

Darren has worked for The Carphone Warehouse for 15 years having worked his way up from the sales floor, starting as a sales consultant in Bath, moving onto store management, and then undertaking an Area Sales Management role before moving out to Spain for a short period of time to help with the Phone house business.

Returning to the UK Darren set up Carphone’s productivity department launching a new HR system into the business.  He then looked after the South East Division of Carphone Warehouse’s retail business which totalled 172 stores. Over the last 3 years he has focused on Carphone’s new store strategy and multichannel business programme, more recently heading this up for the UK and Europe as well as looking after any new strategic partner relationships within the group.

Ultimately, growing The Carphone Warehouse and now Best Buy’s future success both in the retail but more importantly the multichannel environment is where Darren’s expertise lies.

Tamer Ozmen, VP Online - Orange

Mr Ozmen is responsible for Orange's Online Channel. In this newly created role, his goal is to increase the channel's share amongst other retail and indirect channels.

Prior to joining Orange, Mr Ozmen was the founding CEO of TouchLocal, a local search website which provided local search and online advertising toolkit for businesses which used arbitrage tools to maximize the return.. Prior to TouchLocal, Mr Ozmen was the CEO of DOL, the largest ISP and integrated internet company in Turkey.

Mr Ozmen started his internet career with priceline.com in the United States.  He was in the team that started the company.  He then worked as Senior VP Product and Sales


Tony Stockil, founder and CEO of Javelin Group

Tony Stockil is the founder and CEO of Javelin Group, Europe's leading ecommerce and multi-channel retail consultancy. With a team of 75 professionals, Javelin Group advises retailers like Tesco, Marks & Spencer, Direct Wines, New Look, Asda and B&Q, as well as brands like Sony on their ecommerce and multi-channel strategies, operations, and technologies, and it builds world class ecommerce solutions. Prior to founding Javelin Group twelve years ago, Tony was a strategy consultant and took his MBA at Harvard Business School.


Nigel Randall, E-Commerce Systems Manager, Waitrose

Nigel has over 20 years of experience in the IT industry spanning Aerospace, Petrochemical and Retail industries. He has spent the last 10 years working for the John Lewis Partnership during which he has headed up a number of teams covering Network Infrastructure and Security, Middleware Systems and most recently e-commerce technology areas. His previous roles in the Petrochemical Industry saw him developing and supporting safety critical IT Systems for a number of major Oil Producers.
 
Nigel's extensive IT background arms him with a strong understanding of all aspects of IT from networking technologies, through to application development and support. He successfully developed the John Lewis Partnership's direct services website Greenbee.com and is presently engaged in a major multi-channel e-commerce initiative for Waitrose.
 
With a focus on speed of delivery and "added value" Nigel believes that IT teams should be seen as an enabler to business change and growth. This requires a collaborative approach and is very much reflected in his views on multichannel retailing.


Joe Tarragano, Enterprise Services, eBay

Joe Tarragano leads the European integration team at eBay, accountable for the commercial and operational success of eBay’s largest sellers. These include more than 30 organisations such as Argos, Debenhams, Tesco, House of Fraser, Kookai and Superdry. This team was created in June 2008 to support eBay strategic focus on connecting high street retailers and brand name manufacturers with its 25m UK users.
Joe joined eBay in 2007 with International responsibility for eBay’s advertising products and its UK Motors seller product line. Previously Joe has over 10 years experience in new product development for the internet, including developing a social media product in Reuters’ incubation team, launching PDF products for the UK national newspapers, and as the European product  marketing director for OneSource, the business information publisher. Joe also founded AskMyNetwork.com, an online social network and yellow pages in 2002.
Joe has trained in trapeze and competed in triathlons but finds looking after a toddler scarier and more tiring.


David Oliver, Director CRM, (EMEA), Hertz Europe Limited

David joined Hertz Europe as Head of Marketing Programmes in late 2007, managing frequent customer membership tiers including #1 Club Gold, which account for more than a quarter of business revenues. Early success led to promotion to Director of Customer Relationship Management for Europe by early 2009.

Before Hertz David spent nine years in several roles at Centrica plc - launching a home insurance joint venture, then managing the brand and high profile advertising for Centrica’s Goldfish credit card brand. Next he planned counter competitor strategy for Centrica’s British Gas, and then led activity to retain and grow value from 12m energy customers. David’s activity to defend market share halved churn amongst selected customer segments.

A French and Economics graduate, outside work David has a busy home-life as proud Dad to four lively children ranging in age from 6 to 16.


Tony Bryant, Business Sector Manager, K3 Retail Business Solutions

Tony Bryant heads up the Food and drink/FMCG sector for K3 Retail Business Solutions. Tony has had many years experience (he says too many to be published!) working in a retail environment, the majority of which was spent at Marks and Spencer. Tony covered roles from Store/Area Manager, Divisional Operations Manager, and Retail Project Manager to Food Senior Programme Manager managing a large end to end supply chain transformation.

Tony has a passion for the fast moving industry and has detailed knowledge of the key functions - Plan, Buy, Make, Move and Sell and understands the interdependencies of information, products and services. He is commercially driven in developing IT solutions and business processes to improve product availability, drive profitable sales and reduce costs.

Outside work Tony plays drums in a local band and tries very hard to maintain a very old Caterham 7 (Car). He also has four Daughters who also require high maintenance and a permanent taxi service.


Ros Hunt, Head of Online, Lloydspharmacy

Ros started her retail career as a graduate with Marks and Spencer, before moving into the healthcare sector in 1994 when she joined Smith & Nephew to work on the Lil-lets and Elastoplast brands.

Firmly focused on consumer marketing Ros had two further marketing manager roles with Cork International & Peter Black Healthcare before returning to retail to take up a position with Lloydspharmacy in 2002. During her first 5 years with the business Ros managed the Pharmacy Marketing & Consumer Marketing teams before she took the opportunity to head the new Online function in 2008.  As Head of Online, Ros has focused on driving sales, improving the customer experience and developing the multi-channel offer.


Duncan Grant, Director of Multichannel, The Entertainer

Having gained a degree in Economics Duncan trained as a Chartered Accountant with KPMG. Working within the Private Equity team advising clients on acquisitions and disposals he gained an insider's view into the operations of companies of different sizes and sectors. In 2006 Duncan left KPMG to join The Entertainer - the UK's largest privately owned toy retailer - initially as Company Analyst and more recently in the role of Multichannel Director. One of Duncan's key tasks was to develop a strategy for The Entertainer's online arm; which three years later is now trading 1000% up on 2006, representing over 15% of total company sales. In August 2009 The Entertainer launched its eBay store and sees channels such as this as a core part of its online strategy.

The Entertainer trades from 50 high street stores, selling a range of over 4,000 toys and games. It has seen double digit sales growth in 2009 and has plans to open 12 new stores in 2010.
